In a recent article from Silicon Alley Insider Mark Zuckerberg was euphemistically quoted saying Facebook allows people “to stay updated on what’s happening around them and share with the people in their lives.” Translation? People like to brag about the awesome crap they do via status updates and Tweets.

As a prolific status-updater I am in no way claiming innocence on this (my last status update was VIP at DMB with Carrot Creative, jealous yet?) But seriously, the reason I bring this to our attention is because as a creative agency, working with brands that consumers want to associate themselves with makes our jobs at Carrot a whole lot easier. We encourage “cool” brands to offer viral content users can share, blog, post, whatever you want to call it, giving the consumer more opportunity to “tag their brag.”

Here are a couple of status updates as good examples

    • Just had an amazing 8 mile run with my new Asics
    • “Won free tickets to see Bruno tonight!”

(disclaimer we have no relationship with Asics or Bruno)
By using these brands to vindicate their bragging, these people unknowingly promoted the brand in perfect context… textbook marketing. Technology platforms that monitor this kind of “name-dropping” across the web give brands and marketers a direct link to how consumers incorporate the product with their lifestyle. Understanding a brands “social reputation” is an integral part of a marketers job.

So with that, take a minute to think about what brands YOU want to associate yourself with and do them a favor and find them on Twitter, join their Facebook Fan Page, or hey, tattoo their logo on your forearm. A good one to get started with? The Carrot Twitter page and Facebook Fan Page.

What do you think, do you have any examples of shameful bragging that put brands in a good (or bad) light?

    • Excellent! Great article, I already saved it to my favourite,
    • Brands ? none at the moment, but I think of having one when I read this post :), and organize one web business with good brand. Thanks for the post. I like it.
    • I don't know if it counts as bragging about a brand but I definitely brag shamelessly about my job. I run a program for undergraduate science students, matching them with research faculty so they can get hands-on experience and hopefully make themselves more attractive to future grad schools and employers. As part of the job I get check up on my students, spending a day with them doing whatever it is that their doing. Thanks to that I spend my summer hiking, kayaking, bird watching, and playing with random things. Every time I do something new it goes up on my facebook page.
    • That Blog up there? That's what I'm doing...and then some.

After a brief bout of unemployment, spent on-line an average 12hrs a day, reading about the world of Social Media, etc. I woke up one day a decided, what the hell...I'm going to start my own company. So, I did.

Spent 3 to 4 months defining, refining and reading everything I could get my pitiful little fingers on. Won a Twitter contest held by mashable.com. Realized, I AM fantastic...and I had been honing my Social Media skills for years.

Now I have a small boutique firm, eChi™ Social Media Solutions. I'm doing very well. Hired three employees a couple of weeks back. And I'm excited every morning.

Plus, I adore >carrot creative...you have been a mentor to this tiny little co. in Arkansas...
