What made the Shorty Awards so great last night was that the people behind Twitter, the platform that made the event possible, were truly excited about what the community had accomplished using their software.

First a big shout out to DUMBO the host nabe for this event. Every day there is more and more evidence of why the triangle between the bridges is referred to as the Digital District.

Many people were initially skeptical of the whole event, but were only too wiling to wait outside Galapagos for 30+ minutes while the crowd was being processed. It was a great feeling being at an event with a VIP line, it was entertaining to watch people not use to long lines at a tech event queuing up like they were attending a hot new club.

Once inside I realized this was not like most networking events and my stack of business cards would stay in firmly nested in my pocket. This was a night of celebration for people who truly enjoy Twitter.

Meeting people you follow on Twitter is always an ethereal experience, you know more about them than their actual friends. In some cases it can even be people you’ve been admiring from afar. I had the privilege of talking to @sacca on the balcony right before the award ceremony started, and was quite humbled by the things he and I discussed. Only at the Shorty Awards could such a meeting take place.

After an action-packed evening like last night I can hardly wait to see what next year’s Shorty Awards has in store!
