UBRSTAR Launches

Carrot Creative is excited to announce the launch of the UBRSTAR website. As the primary developer of content, design and social network implementation, we are proud to partner with The New Haven Theater Company to offer live theater and stage stardom to the world. UBRSTAR utilizes a troupe of both live stage performers and online performers that can become part of the performance by submitting online videos of their character of choice (given the specific performance). The live performance, in which live stage actors must interact with their online counterparts, is broadcast live through Ustream.tv for the global audience to view and simultaneously comment and provide content at the leisure of their own chair. This summer’s show will be a contemporary version of a Shakespeare classic entitled “Run to the Capulets, Raise Up the Montagues: The Investigation of Romeo and Juliet.”

iCarrot - shinier than ever
February 14th, 2008

As my first post to the Carrot blog, it is with great pride that I would like to confess my geekdom. I, Kyle MacDonald am a large geek. And as said geek- I love geeky new stuff, and Carrot Blog’s new iPhone + iPod Touch Bookmarklet Icon is no exception.

iCarrotAs of today, our blog now sports its nifty new Bookmarklet Icon when saved as a bookmark on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Don’t worry if you don’t have either of those yet, (which our icon may finally make it worth buying) I will share with you our lovely new addition. Isn’t she shiny?

New Animal Planet logo rebrand… an atrocity :(

Animal Planet's crappy rebrand
After the Super Bowl yesterday (congrats, Giants), we were channel surfing for a few minutes and saw that the “Puppy Bowl” was re-playing. However, it was difficult to enjoy as intermittent views of an awful logotype appeared. Apparently, we were seeing Animal Planet’s brand new logo…

According the this NY Times Article, Animal Planet is using words “like ‘gut-driven,’ ‘completely immersive’ and ‘unexpected’ in describing what it will be like once the new roster is introduced on Feb. 3.” That’s fine and all, but the drastic rebrand is at best “unexpected,” and not in a good way. A general rule of good design is to not do anything without purpose (particularly where small, simple marks/logos have to say alot about what they represent)… and unless it is just lost on me, the quarter-clockwise turn of the ‘M’ seems pointless. The condensed ‘N’ and ‘A’ look awkward… all in all, it transmits a vague sense of ‘wild’ and a strong sense of terrible.

What is most unfortunate, is that it also breaks the relationship that the former Animal Planet logo had with the Discovery Channel logo:

UPDATE: A nice article from Brand New takes its own look.
