Snuggie s a rip off of the slanket, slanket is a ripoff of the freedom blanket and that was stolen from some lady's craft idea. its all about the ability to market the product and how much backing you have.

I think there is a difference between outsourced product development, and letting product development be more in the open to let it drive marketing. A startup with a blog about their development efforts isn't necessarily crowdsourcing, but they are still interacting with the community and I think it's some of the strongest marketing they can do. Where firms listen to their customers during product development, or seek community solutions (a la Netflix) so much the better.

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens with Windows Seven along these lines.

Two things.
Number One: Billy Mays is the man. Slapchop and the Shamwow have nothing on Mighty Putty and the Awesome Auger.

Number Two: The Snuggie is a ripoff of the Slanket. Unfortunately for the makers of the Slanket, their marketeering technique of going through the SkyMall didn't fare too well.

I think a certain amount of the product development process will be crowdsourced, however there is still a critical role that internal development plays, a-la Apple. It will work for certain products, but not ones requiring innovating beyond known standards/technologies.

Spot on. The ability to do advertising at low cost is going to kill the shops that rely on the cash cow of TV.

I like the idea that digital adverising shifts may affect long term produuct development; I would argue that this happened for with the advent of the infomercial. I think we'll see product development shift into more of the public eye, as it becomes the core of the marketing message, building anticipation fot the product by engaging with the community around it.

As long as I get to keep the Slap Chop infomercial...most fun I've had since Will It Blend?
