Several weeks ago my dear sweet MacBook Pro that leads a protected, sheltered life similar to that of a child in one of those big plastic bubbles had a bit of a dizzy spell. It reminded me of when the air conditioner freaks out and essentally kills itself at the beginning of The Brave Little Toaster. Oh you weren’t scarred by that film as a child? Count your lucky stars. If you want to subject yourself to that terrifing moment… Continue Reading
Timeline for Brand Pages
As of March 30th Facebook will be rolling out its biggest visual change by making Timeline mandatory for all 800 million users and brands. In case you haven’t heard, this rollout is not optional and there’s a pretty good chance your current wall won’t look as nice come the end of the month. It is certainly in your best interest to be prepare yourself for this major adjustment (especially if you’re managing client accounts), so we here at Carrot have… Continue Reading
So You’re On The Internet, Huh?
How do I know I’ve fallen victim to the social media plague? It may or may not have something to do with checking Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook before going to sleep. And before getting out of bed in the morning. And skimming through updates periodically throughout the day. I mean really, have you seen the “Social Media” folder on my iPhone? I need a folder for my folder. And then if I could just take a screenshot of that folder… Continue Reading
Get Global
We all have those moments when we realize, however small the world can seem, that it really is a very big place. And though we are all very similar at the core, how we operate and do business on a daily basis varies drastically. For me, that moment was in between my freshman and sophomore year in college while studying abroad in Spain. I had just arrived to my host family’s apartment in Madrid, and was anxious to meet them…. A Pinterest-ing Experience
What do you get when you combine Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and a bunch of other social media platforms? Pinterest! This virtual pinboard is kicking ass and many find themselves asking, “Why didn’t I think of that?” So how could such an obvious idea create so much traffic and buzz? There are countless blog posts and articles you can skim through that share traffic statistics, demographics, and other reasons why it has gained popularity so quickly. However, none of them talk… Continue Reading
We the Best
Prior to joining Carrot, I spent a year and half working for a traditional ad agency in Manhattan. It was a valuable experience, but I wasn’t having a whole lot of fun and I began to feel restless. I was working on a pharmaceutical account for which we created TV and print ads exclusively. Social media wasn’t part of the equation. I became bored and began the tedious process of finding a new job. I interviewed at a number of… Continue Reading
Closing the Design Gap
It’s settled. Your senior portfolio is complete, you’ve wrapped up your internship and you’ve landed your first paid job in the industry. You’re going to be a professional designer. You’ve spent countless hours gushing over shots on Dribbble, bought every book from A Book Apart, and followed every Brooklyn Beta presenter on Twitter – all in preparation for that first “real” design project where you’ll prove you have what it takes. The time has come and you’re pumped to start…. Continue Reading
CSS Patterns, Evolved
Disclaimer: This is a technical post on html and css, intended for those who are very familiar with the languages. The value of clean semantics There are a lot of web activists that promote semantic markup, and very early in my journey into front end dev I got swept up in this. There’s something really beautiful about writing really clean html, with no extra elements or “utility classes” (classes that you put on your elements in order to recycle a… Continue Reading
Social Media for a Cleaner Web
This past weekend Dan, Tony, Jeff and myself attended the Cleanweb Hackathon at the NYU Campus. The 24-hour event challenged programmers, college students, entrepreneurs and the like to create solutions for problems related to energy efficiency, transportation and clean technology. As Cleanweb notes on their website, the hackathon was an opportunity “to demonstrate the impact of applying information technology to resource constraints.” Companies such as Tendril, Genability, and Brighter Planet granted attendees access to their existing API’s, allowing hackers to… Continue Reading
Year Of The Programmer
Recently a friend was telling me that the marketing people at his office were often asking the developers for different data sets they needed to conduct their research. It was hard for them to get to those requests quickly though, because the developers were busy as it was. It was what he told me next that really got my attention, however: instead of waiting on the Dev team to solve the problem for them, the marketing team made up for… Continue Reading
